Board Nominations

As announced through the member email list, we are seeking nominations for the positions of Vice-President, Treasurer, and Member-at-Large. You are strongly encouraged to nominate a candidate or consider running for office yourself if you are a CHHA Vancouver member; volunteers are essential to the important work of CHHA.

To be a board member you need to be a member in good standing of CHHA Vancouver and to be nominated by two other members of any branch of CHHA. There will be a vote at the AGM. The nomination deadline is Thursday November 20, 2025.

You’re invited to our annual general meeting with guest speaker Ted W. Clegg, from ALDS provider of advanced hearing solutions. Ted will be speaking about alerting systems and alarm clocks for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Ted is the owner and operator of ALDS and a graduate from the Hearing Instrument Practitioners program at Douglas College. He is a registered RHIP with CSHBC and has been a contract instructor at Douglas College for their HIP program, teaching the assistive devices and peripherals classes. Ted also works part time for a family owned and operated hearing clinic in the Fraser Valley. Before entering the hearing and voice amplification domain, Ted was in the automotive and industrial markets in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. His careers and personal travels have taken him to numerous countries around the globe, causing him to lose his hair and slowly lose his mind.

In this webinar, Tim explores the full range of assistive listening technologies, with a focus on the newest advancement: Bluetooth LE with Auracast. He’ll address key questions such as how it works, whether it’s already available in today’s hearing devices, and when different hearing aid manufacturers are expected to adopt it. Tim will provide the latest updates and insights to help you stay informed.

Tim’s presentation will be followed by a Q and A session.

About Tim Archer:
For over four decades, Tim has brought stories to life through sound, designing immersive audio experiences for IMAX films, museums, science centers, and themed attractions. In 2012, he founded Advanced Listening to bring his expertise to the hard-of-hearing community by designing and installing assistive listening systems throughout Canada. Tim and his team at Advanced Listening invest considerable effort into researching and developing innovative technologies that improve communication. Their expertise is further shared through ongoing contributions to the Rick Hansen Foundation’s technical sub-committee.

15th Annual Walk2Hear

We are excited to invite you to CHHA Vancouver’s 15th Annual Walk2Hear! Everyone with a hearing loss, family, friends, health care professionals / educators / students, and members of the local community are invited.

Registration is at 1:00 pm, and the Walk (or Run) begins at 1:30 pm.

All abilities of walkers and runners are welcome. The walk/run takes place on a wide dirt path at Jericho Beach Park. Walkers will do 1 lap of the route (2.2km), and runners will do 2 laps (4.5km).

Walk2Hear is a wonderful opportunity to meet others in the hearing loss community, and to support accessibility, local connections, education, and advocacy.

Bring: Your own water bottle, walking/running shoes, and a spirit of fun!

Walk2Hear will take place rain or shine. Please check the weather forecast and dress appropriately.

Getting There:
Driving – Parking available at the Jericho East EasyPark paid lot, access off 4th Ave. or Point Grey Road. Some street parking in the area – check the street signage.
CyclingBike rack near the concession/washrooms building.
Transit – Type “Jericho East EasyPark” into Translink’s Trip Planner to find the best route from your location. The closest bus stop is a 5 minute walk away, at 4th Ave. and Wallace St. on the number 4 route. There are various other stops within a 10 minute walk.

Living Well with Hearing Loss

We are delighted to invite you to a joint workshop by CHHA Vancouver and CHHA-BC, presented by Gael Hannan and Joy Borgonia. Gael and Joy will discuss strategies to improve life with hearing loss. They’ll share about interpersonal communication tips, assistive technology, supports, and programs available.

What is Your Communication Toolbox?
There is no single solution to managing hearing loss and its challenges. Filling a ‘toolbox’ with helpful knowledge, attitudes, behaviours, and strategies can help you to communicate more effectively and help others understand the challenges of living with hearing loss. This presentation will highlight the key points of Lisa’s12-session course, Living Successfully with Hearing Loss,and provide practical take-away tips.

Dr. Lisa Dillon Edgett is an audiologist specializing in Aural Rehabilitation and an instructor at Vancouver Community College. Lisa’s passion lies in helping adults with hearing loss to communicate more effectively. She expanded the audiologic rehabilitation program offered through Vancouver Community College to include three levels, outreach options, and online delivery. Her Living Successfully with Hearing Loss curriculum includes speechreading, conversation strategies, assertiveness skills, and guided communication practice.

CHHA Vancouver 14th Annual Walk2Hear

Thank you all for participating in our 14th Annual Walk2Hear.

We had a lot of fun walking with you and can’t wait to do it again next year. A special thank you to everyone who raised funds, and congrats to the prize winners!

We also wanted to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who participated and helped out at this event. You made it all possible!

This year, one of our board members is ready to run the route with anyone interested in a little more of a challenge! All abilities of walkers and runners are welcome. The walk/run takes place on a wide dirt path at Jericho Beach Park.

Walk2Hear is a wonderful opportunity to meet others in the hearing loss community, and to support accessibility, local connections, education, and advocacy.

10th Annual Walk2Hear for Persons with a Hearing loss

CHHA Vancouver Branch will be holding a Virtual Walk2Hear this year on Sunday, September 27, 2020.

This is the 10th year of CHHA Vancouver hosting our annual walkathon as a way to raise funds and bring our community together. Please help us raise funds for our activities to support people with hearing loss. Join us at Walk2Hear to connect with each other virtually and celebrate ten years of Walk2Hear!

The event will begin at 1:30 pm with introductions and a warmup video, then participants are encouraged to walk around their own neighbourhoods. Following the walk, there will be a presentation to celebrate 10 years of Walk2Hear and a draw prize for gift cards. Captioning (CART) and American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters will be provided.

Participate in the CHHA Vancouver Virtual Walk2Hear event by registering or sponsoring a registered walker at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/canadian-hard-of-hearing-association-vancouver-branch/p2p/2020-walk-2-hear/. Encourage all your family and friends to register and join the event for only $10 to raise funds for CHHA Vancouver and safely come together as a community.

AGM and Board Nominations

Hello CHHA Members and friends,

Please be advised that our upcoming Annual General Meeting of the CHHA Vancouver Branch will be held on Monday, November 18th from 6:30 to 8:45 pm at Children’s Hearing and Speech Centre of British Columbia, 3575 Kaslo Street Vancouver, BC.

Please RSVP no later than November 14th, 2019. A reminder to use street parking as the gates in the parking lot close in the evening and we don’t want your car trapped inside!

We are very fortunate to have Dr. Brenda Poon, PhD, and Dr. Lorienne Jenstad, PhD joining us following the AGM. Both Dr. Poon and Dr. Jenstad will discuss a series of practical and useful research projects mainly focusing on people who work in noise. Their topic is Making connections: Hearing research in the community

Meanwhile, this is an election year for CHHA Vancouver so nominations are open for officer positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Member-at-large. 9th Annual Walk2Hear for Persons with a Hearing Loss

Accessibility Update: CART and ASL interpreters will be provided at Walk2Hear on Sunday, September 22nd!

Did you know that hearing loss is the number one disability among Canadians? In fact, one in five people are affected by hearing loss.

CHHA Vancouver Branch is a consumer-based, non-profit, self-help organization working with hard of hearing consumers and their support networks to decrease isolation and remove barriers to hearing loss by providing: supportive environments, education, resources, referrals, and advocacy. CHHA works cooperatively with professionals, service providers, government bodies, and provides information about hard of hearing issues and solutions.

Please help us raise funds for our activities and join us in our annual Walk2Hear to connect with each other and to enjoy a 2 km or a 5 km walk together. Following the walk, there will be a presentation and prizes will be awarded. CART and ASL interpreters will be provided. This is our Ninth Annual Walk2Hear!

Date of the Walk: Sunday, September 22, 2019

Location: Jericho Beach Park, East End.  The meeting place is between 2nd Ave. & Wallace St.

Registration: Between 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm. We will also sell Walk2Hear T-shirts. Cash or cheque only.

The Walk begins at 1:30 pm.

Anyone of any age can register for only $10. Encourage all your family and friends to join you and register for the Walk2Hear. The Air Canada draw will be around 2:15 PM on Sept. 22 at the Walk.

  1. Go to https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/canadian-hard-of-hearing-association-vancouver-branch/p2p/2019-walk-2-hear
  2. Click on the “Join as an Individual” button, which will take you to the “Join 2019 CHHA Vancouver Walk2Hear” form.
  3. Fill out all the required fields.
    1. After entering your email address in the first field, if you have a CanadaHelps account, you will be prompted to enter your password.
    2. If you do not have a CanadaHelps account, then you will see a box that will prompt you to create a password so that you can set up a CanadaHelps account.
  4. On page 2 of the form, pay your $10 registration fee by credit card.
  5. On page 3 of the form, create your personal fundraising page.
  6. Copy the given short URL of your fundraising page and share with your network. You can also modify your fundraising page by clicking on the tabs “Details”, “Images & Videos”, and “Donations.”
  7. Done!

 

How to donate to a CHHA Vancouver Walk2Hear 2019 Participant

  1. Go to https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/canadian-hard-of-hearing-association-vancouver-branch/p2p/2019-walk-2-hear and find the participant’s fundraising page by:
    1. Clicking on “Find a Team or Person” and search for the participant’s name, OR
    2. Scrolling down the webpage to find the participant’s name under the list of fundraisers,
    3. Then click on the link to the participant’s fundraising page.
  2. Click on the “Donate to Me” button at the top of the participant’s fundraising page.
  3. Type the donation amount in the donation box. Add a message of support in the given text box if desired.
  4. Click on “Continue with My Donation” and fill out the information for payment and your tax receipt.
  5. Click on “Complete Donation Now”. Done!
